About the Book

“Peasants, Environment and Sustainable Development” is a collection of research papers written by the author over three decades from 1974 to 2008. The topics addressed range from peasant communities, tribal communities, energy problems, choice of agricultural technologies such as irrigation, agricultural implements, fertilizers and pesticides and socio-economic factors influencing their choice, urbanization, water pollution, socio-economic implications of economic reforms and host of other issues concerning peasants and rural Indian society. However, the common theme that runs through all these papers is its central concern with sustainable agriculture and rural development and environment issues.

This book is descriptive as well as analytical in its presentation. It promises to be a valuable reference for all concerned – research students and faculty of sociology, economics, environment science, social work and rural management as well as for planners and practitioners of rural development.

About the Author / Editor

Jayawant B. Ambekar is Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Earlier, he has also worked in various research and educational organizations such as the Anthropological Survey of India, Mysore (1972-74), Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) Project, Indian Space Research, CSSIBER, Kolhapur (1980-83).

Professor Ambekar visited many countries for presenting research papers in international conferences and also conducting research. His areas of interest are community studies, communication, environment and Development. He is the author of “Communication and Rural Development” (1992), editor of “Agricultural Communication and Sustainable Development” (2008) and co-editor of “NGOs and Development” (2004).
