About the Book
The idea of development, particularly in the context of India, demands more nuanced engagement with its various dimensions. Though India has witnessed spectacular growth for a considerable period of time, it also experienced an uneven developmental journey. The disparity of development is nowhere more evident than in the Northeastern part of the country. Northeastern states, for various reasons, have been denied the attention they deserved. For decades, these states have been left behind from the mainstream developmental discourse and still face challenges that impede the development of the area.
This incisive book takes a fresh look at the problems that these states face today and explores the causes of prolonged asymmetrical development, in comparison to other parts of the country. With contributions from eminent scholars, researchers and development experts, this book would give a new perspective to the development and the deprivation of Northeast India.

About the Author / Editor
Anupam Hazra is currently a Member of Parliament of the Sixteenth Lok Sabha from Bolpur constituency, West Bengal and also an Assistant Professor. He has taught Social Work in Assam University and Visva-Bharati University, West Bengal. He did his doctoral research on Rural Sanitation Management. Dr Hazra is on the advisory board of many international journals and is associated with various international social service organisations. Apart from books like India’s Social Sector and Millennium Development Goals (2013), Rural India and the Emerging Developmental Challenges (2013) and Sustaining Development in North East India (2013), he has contributed more than hundred papers for edited books and leading social science journals. He has also presented papers in seminars and conferences in India and abroad.
