About the Book
The book is an eclectic attempt to thoroughly understand socio-economic and cultural problems of female labour force in a vital, albeit specific, area of the organized sector of Indian economy. The approach adopted throughout the work is essentially sociological in nature. Quantitative information is soundly supported by qualitative observations and arguments throughout the research work.
The book unfolds a comprehensive and critical reflection on the present status of women plantation workers in Karnataka. While working out the analytical details, the book constantly keeps in focus the social, economic and power dimensions in the broad context of gender stratification in modern India. Substantive data gathered though probing individual interviews present valid conclusions highlighting the main thrust of the work that due to poor living conditions and life opportunities, women workers in coffee plantations constitute a highly neglected and exploited group in the Indian labour force. The much publicized governmental welfare schemes have also come under close examination and sharp criticism for their ineffective implementation.
The scarcity of systematic research on this sizeable working population leaves several gaps to be bridged and this work makes a useful contribution in this regard adding a new to the sociology of gender problems in India.
