About the Book
The French sociologist Emile Durkheim is a key figure in the development of sociology as an academic discipline. This book examines his seminal contributions to sociology. Besides his four major works (The Rules of the Sociological Method, The Division of Labor in Society, Suicide, and The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life), it covers his writings in political sociology (Professional Ethics and Civic Morals, and Socialism) and the sociology of education (Education and Sociology, Moral Education, and The Evolution of Educational Thought). Durkheim’s abiding engagement with the relation between the individual and society is the latent thread that runs through the different chapters of this book; the subtitle of the book is reflective of this.
