About the Book

The notion of Classical Sociology in India begins with the seminal works of D.P. Mukerji. He was an exponent of the Synthesis Theory of Indian Culture and non-positivistic Indian Sociology, and has analyzed the impact of the West on Indian society as a phase in cultural assimilation. In his view, Indian culture has evolved and developed by a series of responses to successive challenges of many ethic groups and cultures leading to a holistic synthesis. His perception of the tradition of Indian society as a symbolic system is the central core of human action and endeavours. The dialectics of diversity as a theoretical paradigm makes DP and his contribution, a monument of live tradition in sociology. The present volume, which symbolizes the intellectual debt of social scientists to DP, who were inspired by the range of his depth of scholarship, sharpness of intellect and personal charisma also signifies their collective desire to commemorate the master and bring him to the centrality of sociological discourse in India and abroad.
