Sukhadeo Thorat, Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, is currently Chairman, University Grants Commission, New Delhi. He also served as the founding Director, Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, New Delhi. He has, to his credit, seventeen books and over seventy scholarly papers published in national and international journals on problems of agriculture development, economic institutions, rural poverty, problem of slums, Dalits, caste discrimination, social and economic ideas of Babasaheb Ambedkar and human rights issues. He has been awarded Padmashree for his contribution to literature and education in 2008. Gail Omvedt is an American-born Indian sociologist and human rights activist. She has been involved in Dalit and anti-caste movements, environmental, farmers’ and women’s movements. Her academic writings include a number of books and articles on class, caste, gender, social movement, Ambedkar and related issues. Martin Macwan is a human rights activist based in Gujarat. He founded the Navsarjan in 1989 to promote the rights of Dalits, addressing issues of discrimination, land rights, wages and women’s rights. He has also served as a convener of the National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights. His work has been recognized internationally, with the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award in 2000.
