About the Book

The existing unsatisfactory condition of our natural resources is primarily a failure of the past resource management system and policies. Conservation, management and development of natural resources on a scientific basis are essential to ensure a sustainable development process of the country. And, this cannot be done properly without involving the rural communities which derive their sustenance from the natural resources. The book focuses on basic need of environmental sustainability through participatory management of natural resources including land, water and forest, and also examines a range of related issues in this context. It also takes note of new people-based initiatives that have emerged in the recent years. Besides Joint Forest Management, the Van Panchayats of Kumaon, the Pani Panchayats in Maharini, and the Sukhamajri experiment in Himachal Pradesh, are some of the well-known examples in this regard. The distinguishing feature of the volume is that it has developed a new paradigm of eco-restructuring involving shifts in technology, economic activities and lifestyles needed to harmonise human activities with natural system.
