About the Book

A combination of health and education – health education – reflects the attributes of both and is aimed at enhancing democratic learning processes, human dignity and community value systems. Health education can be defined as the area in which social and health sciences are applied to facilitate the development of healthy lifestyles and behaviour among people. It is, therefore, important that people in a community be organized to solve their health problems through their own efforts where no organized institutions are in action.

Based on the author’s experience in community health education programmes, the present book describes, explains, evaluates and even theorizes, on the important issues of health and recreation as they apply to one and all. It also examines the potential of culturally and historically-rooted action-oriented educational methods and materials to address the problems of the deprived sections of people, viz., women, children with special needs, and the elderly.

Besides students of home science, the book will prove useful for development workers, activists, planners and policy makers.

Rameshwari Pandya is a Senior Faculty in the Department of Extension and Communication, Faculty of Family and Community Sciences, M.S. University of Baroda, Gujarat.

Her areas of interests are Adult Education and Women Studies. She is the author/co-author of many books, articles, review papers and chapters in different volumes in the areas of her specialization. She is also the recipient of Smt. Leela Ben Shah Gold Medal for her academic merit.

She has conducted many training programmes and has also participated in many seminars, conferences and workshops at national and international levels.
