Sustainable development emphasizes on change in order to improve ecological, economic and social conditions of all people, all the times, and at all places. The brundtland report perceived “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development recognizes the value of the natural system that supports life on earth. An increasing number of environmental researches are being conducted on the human causes and impacts of environmental change as well as recognizing that local and regional scales are critical for human dimensions of sustainable development. Such an approach will promote capacity-building, particularly in terms of human resources and networks and policy support activities. The human driving forces of environmental change and their implication to sustainable development are gaining currency these days. Most of the social science disciplines place a strong emphasis on the integrated involvement of human dimension research. Environmental protection, as a component of sustainable development, consistent with poverty eradication, is imperative in resource management. R B. Singh is Research Scientist, Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. He has been writing in his areas of specialization, namely, Environmental Studies, Remote Sensing, GIS Technology and Urban & Regional Development, and has also brought out several books. The UNESCO/ISSC also awarded him 1998 Research and Study Grants Award in Social and Human Sciences.
