About the Book

The informal sector is now seen as the next engine of growth for the Indian economy. This book has explored the informal manufacturing sector in India both intensively and against the broader macro-economic perspective to examine its past trends and suggest policy options for its future growth and transformation. It attempts to have a broad overview of extent, growth and productivity levels in this sector in India and provides substantial insight into the interactions, dynamics and transition of the sector across pre-reform, intermediate and post-reform periods, across its different segments. Keeping in mind the extremely heterogeneous nature of this sector, the study is carried out at a disaggregated level for different segments of the sector both for rural and urban areas.

This will be helpful to future researchers in this area, especially those who want to supplement such macro studies with micro level case studies on specific industries within informal manufacturing sector.

Dipa Mukherjee is currently teaching at the Narasinha Dutt College, Howrah, West Bengal. She attained her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She has written in “The Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Indian Journal of Regional Science, Journal” “of Educational Planning and Administration, Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy, and Asia Pacific Development Journal, ” apart from contributing to various edited volumes.
