About the Book

Irrigated agriculture is a major social innovation in Rajasthan and it has made its impact on socio-economic and cultural environment. The book attempts to cover Geographical perspectives on irrigation system in arid and semi arid regions. The volume is divided in five parts. Part I deals with the development of irrigation in the arid and semi arid regions. This section also includes correlation between quality of ground water and cropping pattern. Part II explains the impact of irrigation on the environmental changes. Part III describes the salient features of three large irrigation projects in Rajasthan. Their social, economic and cultural impacts on environment have also been assessed there. Part IV of the volume covers the various aspects of the Indira Gandhi Canal Command Area. All the writers in this section have also considered the impacts of the project on ecology on the basis of their own experiences in the area. Part V deals with water management schemes for irrigated cultivation in the Canal Command Area.
