R.N. Athavale

The Centre for Environment Education (CEE) was established in August 1984 as a Centre of Excellence supported by the Ministry of Environment and forests, Government of India. The primary mandate of the Centre is to improve public awareness and understanding of environmental issues with a view to promote the conservation and wise use of nature and natural resources. CEE received India’s highest award, the ‘Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar’ for the year 1997, in recognition of the quality and impact of its contribution in the field of environmental education.
Dr. R.N. Athavale, an Emeritus Scientist with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, is a pioneer in water harvesting with over forty years’ research experience in fields such as isotope hydrology, natural and artificial recharge of aquifers and sustainable supply of potable water. He has worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the University of Copenhagen, the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics and the National Geophysical Research Institute. Dr. Athavale has published 150 research papers and reports in national and international journals.
